School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are a really smart way to gain a qualification and earn while you learn!

They're best organised at the end of Years 9 or 10, ready to start in Years 10 or 11. You must have your apprenticeship or traineeship registered by the end of June in Year 11 but the earlier the better to ensure you can meet the required work experience hours by the end of Year 12 without interfering with your studies.

A school-based apprenticeship is a five-year contract. During Years 11 and 12 you will complete stage one of your apprenticeship, get your HSC and have part time paid work-experience. After Year 12, you continue your apprenticeship stages two, three and your fourth year of on-the-job learning.

A school-based traineeship is a two year contract over Years 11 and 12. You leave school with your HSC, two years of work experience and a nationally recognised qualification (usually a Certificate II). Students complete a minimum of 100 days accredited training and eight hours per week of paid on the job employment during the period of the HSC. As a trainee you can work extra hours during the school holidays, weekends or after school.

All your training is carried out under the Australian Qualifications Framework so it鈥檚 recognised throughout Australia.

Your safety is our major concern. Our apprentices and trainees rated us at 90% across six categories in a WorkCover Safety Culture Survey (2011), making us a clear leader in Work Health Safety (WHS) management.
